The Story

Tanzania at its most extreme, and most unforgettable.

Lake Natron does not look like the rest of Tanzania. It is hot, remote and stark, a shallow alkaline lake sitting in the Rift Valley beneath the outline of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the volcano the Maasai call the Mountain of God. The water shifts colour with light and minerals, crusted at the edges in pinks and whites that look almost unreal.

The lake matters far beyond its beauty. It is an important breeding site for Lesser Flamingos, and to see them gathered on these strange waters is to witness one of the region’s great wildlife stories. Here the harsh conditions that keep many species away are precisely what draw the flamingos.

Beyond the lake, the area offers walks, waterfalls near Engaresero, encounters with Maasai culture and, for those with the energy, the challenge of Ol Doinyo Lengai itself. It is a place that demands time and effort, and rewards both. If the classic savannah safari is the well-lit stage, Natron is the wild, dramatic backstage.

Explore the shoreline and escarpment on foot with a local guide, in the cooler hours of the day.

03
Engaresero waterfalls

Follow a stream gorge to cool water and a striking contrast with the surrounding heat.

Maasai culture

Spend time with local communities who know this landscape intimately.

05
Ol Doinyo Lengai

For strong hikers, the mountain offers one of Tanzania’s most demanding and dramatic climbs, usually started at night to avoid the heat.

06

Colour-shifting water, volcanic silhouettes and huge skies, best at sunrise and late afternoon.

Plan It Well

Insider advice.

How to fit it in

Plan this as a dedicated remote adventure rather than a quick stop. Conditions can be hot, so local guiding and sensible timing matter.

Tips from the ground
  • Plan for heat. Start early and carry plenty of water and sun protection.
  • Use local guides for walks and any volcano climb.
  • Roads are rough, so allow generous travel time and a suitable 4x4.
  • Treat this as a destination, not a stop on the way to somewhere else.
Pairs well with

Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Eyasi or a northern circuit route with Ngorongoro.
