Tanzania Travel Guide

Travel
Well.

Tanzania rewards travellers who arrive prepared. From choosing the right season to understanding local rhythms, here's what you need to know before you begin your journey.

Explore the Guide
Before You Travel

Tanzania is easier to enjoy when the details are already understood.

Tanzania is a vast and varied country. A journey can move from the savannahs of the northern circuit to the beaches of Zanzibar, from high-altitude mountain trails to quiet cultural experiences.

The best itinerary is not simply the one with the most destinations. It is the one that matches your time, interests, travel style and the season in which you arrive.

Use this guide as a starting point. Once you know what you want to experience, Dawson can help you build the journey around it.

01

When Should You Visit Tanzania?

Tanzania can be travelled throughout the year. The right time depends on what you want to experience.

June – October
Dry Season

Excellent conditions for wildlife viewing, with generally dry weather and strong visibility across many safari areas.

January – February
Green Season

A beautiful period for landscapes, young wildlife in some areas and fewer visitors in selected destinations.

March – May
Long Rains

Rainfall is higher, but landscapes become exceptionally green and selected lodges may offer attractive seasonal rates.

November
Short Rains

Short afternoon showers can occur while many safari areas remain rewarding and relatively quiet.

02 · Packing

Pack for the journey, not just the destination.

Safari days, mountain mornings and island evenings can feel very different. Lightweight, practical layers are usually more useful than packing for one climate alone.

Light Clothing

Comfortable, breathable clothing for warm days.

Comfortable Shoes

Suitable footwear for walking, sightseeing and nature experiences.

Sun Protection

Hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen.

Binoculars

Useful for wildlife, birds and distant landscapes.

Camera

Bring extra memory and battery capacity for long days.

Personal Essentials

Any regular medication and basic personal items.

Travel Adapter

A universal adapter can make charging easier.

Day Bag

A small daypack for excursions and daily essentials.

03 · Practical Information

The Details That Make Travel Easier

Currency

The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency. Major hotels and tourism businesses may accept international cards, but carrying some local currency is useful.

Cards & Payments

Cards are widely used in established hotels and tourism businesses. It is still sensible to have a backup payment option.

Passport & Documents

Keep your passport, travel documents and relevant confirmations accessible throughout your journey.

Arrivals

International travellers commonly enter through airports including Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Language

Swahili is the national language. English is widely used within tourism and many professional settings.

Electricity

Tanzania generally uses Type G electrical sockets. A universal travel adapter is recommended.

04 · Getting Around

Tanzania is a journey between places.

Distances can be larger than they appear on a map. Dawson plans the rhythm of your journey so that transfers become part of the itinerary rather than an inconvenience.

Private Road Transfers

Ideal for safari circuits, private journeys and flexible itineraries.

Domestic Flights

Useful for connecting distant regions efficiently.

Island Connections

Flights and marine transfers connect mainland Tanzania with Zanzibar.

Combined Journeys

Safari, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar can be combined into one carefully paced itinerary.

05 · Connectivity

Stay connected — but give yourself permission to disconnect.

Mobile connectivity is available in many towns, hotels and populated areas, while remote safari locations can have limited or no signal. That is part of the appeal of being in the wilderness.

Mobile Network

Local SIM and eSIM options may be available depending on your device and travel requirements.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is common in hotels and lodges, although remote camps may offer limited connectivity.

Battery

A power bank can be useful during long safari days and remote travel.
